Hizen Masatsugu Katana

Very well made gendaito katana forged by Masatsugu. Blade is in full polish with nice active hamon and well forged typical Hizen hada. Small open grain above the shinogi in front of the habaki. Good quality gunto koshirae in great condition. Masatsugu real name was Taguchi Kiichi. He was born on the 28th July , the 37th year of Meiji (1904). From the tenth year of Showa (1935), he studied with his father, Ichitaro. He later entered the smithy of Kurihara Akihide. He first entered his work in the Nihonto Tenrankai (exhibition) of Showa 14 (1939), winning the silver medal. The Next year (1940) he won the gold medal, and in the 16th year of Showa (1941) he won special recognition. The same year he became a contract swordsmith to the Army. After the war he also won the Encouragement Prize and the Endeavorment Prize at the Sword Making Technique Exhibition. He resided in Hachiman-cho, Karatsu-shi.
